Cycling routes in the Paphos region – sample itineraries
GEROSKIPOU - PETRA TOU ROMIOU - KOUKLIA – GEROSKIPOU
DISTANCE 40km, OR 25km UP TO KOUKLIA
This is a trekking tour in one of the nicest coastal areas of Cyprus. Starting from the Geroskipos touristic area, the route takes you to one of the most impressive natural sites of Cyprus associated with Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty.
According to legend, this strikingly beautiful spot is where Aphrodite rose from the waves and the foaming sea and was then escorted on a shell at the rocks known as ‘Rock ofAphrodite’ or ‘Petra tou Romiou’ in Greek. The Greek name, Petra tou Romiou, “the Rock of the Greek”, is associated with the legendary Byzantine hero, Digenis Akritas, who kept the marauding Saracens at bay with his amazing strength. It is said that he heaved a huge rock into the sea, destroying the enemy's ships.
After a short stop for a swim at the very same sea that the goddess of love and beauty was born we head to the village of Kouklia for a lunch / coffee break.
The village is built in the venue were "Palaipafos" (Old Pafos) -the seat of the kingdom of Pafos -stood, which was one of the most important ancient kingdoms of Cyprus. Lunch at Kouklia.
The entire area of the community, including also the place where -today -the houses of the village are built, is an important archaeological region. Excavations have been conducted at times, bringing to surface the famous temple of "Aphrodite of Pafos" (Pafia Aphrodite), the remains of the fortification of Palaipafos, and various other movable findings that are found in the archaeological Museum situated in the village, housed in the medieval villa south of the village. At Kouklia one has the choice to return back to Geroskipos by bike or we can arrange a lift by coach or car.
PLATRES – PAPHOS
Setting off from Platres, we will have the opportunity to ride a tour in the neighbouring villages and experience Cyprus village life. We will also ride over the three medieval Venetian Bridges of the area passing through Foini and Mylikouri. From Platres we head west mainly descending towards Anogyra village to visit the unique Olive oil museum, watch the olive oil extraction methods of the past (millstone, olive press) and various items related to the storage and uses of the olive oil as well as its history. After Anogyra we will start descending to Kouklia - the old city of Paphos before we finish in Geroskipou.
POLIS – AKAMAS – PAPHOS
Setting off from the picturesque traditional seaside town of Polis, we will ride to the Natura 2000 preserved National Park of Akamas, where we will have the chance to see some spectacular scenery with the local fauna and flora and the ancient baths of Aphrodite next to the beautiful landscape beside the Mediterranean sea.
