EUROSTAR SUCCESS
Firstly, I’m sure you’ll want to join me in celebrating CTC’s success in persuading Eurostar to drop its plans to make passengers dismantle their bikes before travelling. Thank you to all of you who helped us achieve this fantastic win. However we now face another huge challenge! The Government will soon decide funding allocations to its promised Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy for the next 5 years. At the same time, the Department for Transport has agreed a 30% cut to its day-to-day spending budget, while the Treasury insists on retaining the Government’s £15bn roads programme and the High Speed 2 rail scheme. Local transport and road maintenance look set to suffer, while media reports suggest that funding for cycling is particularly at risk. Email your MP now! With CTC’s backing, MPs and Peers from the All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group (APPCG) recently wrote to the Chancellor, urging him to provide the funding needed for the Prime Minister's promised "cycling revolution" at least to get into second gear. Thanks to CTC’s pre-election ‘Vote Bike’ campaign earlier this year, we know of over 90 MPs – including David Cameron and Cycle Minister Robert Goodwill – who have previously supported annual spending of at least £10 per person on cycling. Using our simple online tool, will you please now urge your MP to add their name in support of the APPCG’s call for the funding needed to Get Britain Cycling? Email your MP now! The more MPs of all parties who declare their support for cycling, the better the chance of persuading George Osborne that cycling is a fantastic investment in the nation’s economic competitiveness, our health, our environment and the quality of life for everyone who lives and works here. With Government budgets being set for the whole of the next 5 years tomorrow and departmental over the following days, we need as many MPs as possible to support the funding so urgently needed to Get Britain Cycling. I hope I can count on you to persuade your MP to add their name to this crucial campaign. Yours in cycling,
